Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 26, 1933]. [Class 39 (iii)] [See also Group II] Metal in the form of sheets, strips, rods or wires, is heated by contact with a hot rotating roller. The process is used for annealing and tempering and for heating preliminary to mechanical forming. The roller 25 is mounted on a shaft 20 which may be rotated and which may move axially. When the roller is to be heated it is moved within an induction heating apparatus 27. When heated it is moved back into the heat insulating chamber 34. Two rollers may be mounted on one shaft and used in conjunction with two working chambers separated by a roller heating chamber or two roller heating chambers separated by a working chamber. A roller may be made wholly of steel or copper, or may consist of a copper drum having a surrounding shell of steel. In Fig. 11 hollow rollers 50 carry intermeshing gears 53 and are heated by internal inductors 57. A tapered roller is employed for heating wire and the wire is wrapped several times around the roller. A hollow roller heated by an internal gas or oil jet is described.
