267,253. Automatic & Electric Furnaces, Ltd., and Wild, L. W. Dec. 30, 1925. Annealing.-In an apparatus for the heat treatment of iron and steel in which means are provided for detecting the passage of the metal .during the heat treatment from the ferro-magnetic to the para-magnetic condition the charge c, Fig. 1, is supported in the chamber b of a furnace a which is heated by a coil d, and a coil e connected in series with the coil d is arranged on the outside of the furnace a for the purpose ,of producing a magnetic force to neutralize the force, produced in the heating zone by the coil d. 'The coil e may be enclosed by a winding f, Fig. 3, which is supplied with alternating current to magnetise the charge c, a further coil g being provided in the circuit of which is a suitable instrument h for detecting the change in the charge c.
