Abstract
414,693. Variable speed gearing. ANDERSON, J. H., 5, Chatsworth Avenue, Cockton Hill, and HOWE, H., 18, Maude Terrace, St. Helen's Auckland, both in Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Feb. 4, 1933, No. 3449. [Class 80 (ii).] Automatic variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises flyweights 24 rotatably mounted on spindles 21 radiating perpendicularly from a transverse shaft 6 rotatably carried in a yoke 4 secured to the driven (or driving) shaft 2, the masses 24 being associated with bevelwheels 27 gearing with a bevel-wheel 29 rigidly secured to the driven yoke 4. The transverse shaft 6 rigidly carries a bevel-wheel 8 gearing with a bevel-wheel 3 fast on the aligned hollow driving-shaft 1. In the form shown the flyweights are each in the form of diametrically-opposed masses 24 and are arranged at right-angles to each other, the ratio of the gearing 27, 29 being two-to-one. In a modification, also shown, cylindrical flywheels are secured to a shaft journalled in the transverse shaft 6 and rigidly, carrying a bevel wheel such as 27. In this case backward rotation of the driven-shaft is prevented by pawl - and - ratchet means, which may be reversible according to the direction of drive required. The gear-wheels 27, 29 may be elliptical or of undulating contour to give the flyweights a cyclic variation. The Provisional Specification states also that there may be a further bevel-wheel in engagement with the transverse bevel-wheel and arranged so as to be capable of being clutched to the driven-shaft 2 alternatively with the yoke 4 which is then freely mounted on the shaft 2.
