Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-In the form shown in Fig. 1, planet pinions d, carried by the driving shaft a, gear with a sun-wheel f fixed on the driven shaft b and with a sun-wheel e loose on the shaft a. The wheel e is driven at a variable speed from a shaft a through gear wheels q, p. a friction disk m, and spring-pressed friction disks j, k. The disks j, k are carried by an auxiliary shaft geared to the pinion attached to the sun-wheel c, and the shaft n is mounted in arms o to enable the disk m to he brought into variable engagement with the disks j, k. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a friction disk m<1>, on the driving shaft a, drives the sun-wheel c through two pairs of friction disks on a shaft n<1> and a friction disk g<1>, and the shaft n<1> is mounted in pivoted arms to enable the disks to be brought into variable engagement.
