[Class 78 (i).] Apparatus for conveying bundles of printed sheets, newspapers &c. without disturbing the alignment of the edges comprises a series of endless bands, chains &c. provided with prongs to engage the edges of the bundles, flexible cords, or wires &c. for retaining the bundles on the conveyer bands, and auxiliary belts or wires with reaches oblique to the reaches of the conveyer bands at points where the supporting positions of the bundles are changed. As shown in elevation, bundles 1 are delivered by parallel narrow bands 3 to a series of conveyers 2, 10, 14, 29, 34, comprising parallel narrow bands, having prongs 2<a>, 10<a>, 14<a>, 29<a>, 34a. The bundles are supported on parallel narrow bands 3 whilst being moved by the prongs 2<a> into the path of the prongs 10<a>. The conveyer 10 in co-operation with the oblique belt 12 turns the bundles through a right angle and brings them into the path of the vertical reach of the convever 14. Endless wires &c. 14<b> and 15 retain the bundles against the pronged conveyers 10 and 14 during this transfer, and endless belts or wires 19 retain the bundles in position where the conveyer 14 changes direction in passing over the pulley 18. The horizontal reach of the conveyer bands 14 may slide over longitudinal supporting bars, or the bundles may be moved along such bars by the prongs on the bands. The bundles may be passed over conical live rollers in order to change direction, the bundles being delivered to and from the rollers by plain bands. The bundles are delivered to the horizontal reach of a pronged conveyer 29. This conveyer comprises the vertical reach shown and co-operates with retaining wires 33 and delivers to the pronged conveyer 34 and horizontal conveyer bands 38. In a modification (Fig. 5 not shown), the bundles are delivered to the conveyer 29 by a pronged conveyer. Any of the driving pulleys may be provided with a ratchet device to permit overrunning. Idler rollers such as 16<a>, 17 are adjustable for tensioning, and the rollers 17 may be provided with cranked spindles to permit passage of the prongs. The retaining cords or wires co-operating with two or more of the bands may be continuous and they may consist of coiled wires. The bands may be twisted helically along a reach.
