Abstract

406,601. Imitation fires ; heating- stoves. THORNTON, J. E., 8, Hill Street, Jersey, Channel Islands. Sept. 11, 1933, No. 25047. [Classes 39 (iii) and 126.] A heating-apparatus comprises an imitation fire C projecting forwardly of a rear heating- chamber A and a reflector or mirror-wall B placed at such an angle above the fire as to reflect it. The fire may be of moulded translucent slabs, as in Fig. 4, or of imitation coal cobs, Fig. 6, illuminated through a window c by burners d in the heating-chamber. The chamber A may be hollow and of metal, heated by gas, oil, electricity, steam, hot water, or solid fuel. Alternatively, it may be a hollow or solid block of refractory material heated by gas, oil, or electricity, that shown in Fig. 4 being heated by gas burners D. The front wall of the block is inclined and the reflector B, which serves also to radiate heat, is attached to it. The reflector may be chromium plated or of stainless steel, and is preferably studded with small pyramidal points to scatter the light. As shown in Fig. 9, parts of the surface may be plane portions appearing brighter than the other parts. In the case of a refractory block, the reflector is attached to the front wall, as in Fig. 4, whilst in the case of a hollow heating chamber it may form the front wall, as in Fig. 6, or may be attached to, and in close contact with, it. It may be placed in contact with steam or hot-water pipes in the chamber. Alternatively, an air-space may be left between the reflector and the heated parts. To increase the heat transfer to the reflector, ribs or gills b1, Figs. 6, 8, may be attached by welding &c. to the back ; or the reflector may be formed of a thick plate and the gills formed by casting, rolling &c. as in the form shown in Fig. 4. A semi-matt or broken-surfaced hearth-plate E, Fig. 6, may be provided, illuminated by light passing through a yellow screen e, which may be removably held in guides to permit the use of screens of different colours. Alternatively to the screen e, a parti-coloured cylinder may surround the light and be adjustable by hand to vary the colouration, and be rotated by a spinner device through reduction gearing to provide a constantly-changing colour effect. Stoves similar to that shown in Fig. 6, but heated respectively by an oil lamp and by electric heating elements, are illustrated.
