403,943. Clutches ; variable speed gearing. ELLIOTT, A. G., Darley Dene, Belper Road, Derby, and HARDY, W. G., Clematis Cottage, West Wittering, near Chichester, Sussex. June 22, 1932, No. 17623. [Class 80 (ii).] Sliding-claw clutch sleeves f, applicable, as shown, to layshaft variablespeed gearing, are constructed so that their teeth, which may be duplicated, as at g and g<1>, are spaced from the splines i on the shaft j, and the sleeve is formed only with end splines h, h<1> spaced from the shaft and also from the splines i when the clutches are engaged so that a certain flexibility is permitted to the sleeve to compensate for irregularities in the clutch teeth or splines.
