Abstract

328,726. Jackson, M. B. March 5, 1929. Clutches, claw; variable-speed gearing.-In a claw clutch, one member is provided with a series of relatively-movable tooth elements 20, 27, Figs. 5 and 8, arranged in pairs, each pair being adapted to engage between two adjacent teeth 3 on the other clutch member 2. The tooth elements 20, 27 enter progressively the opposed tooth space 2<1> and, when in full engagement, drive in either direction without backlash. The application to change-speed gearing is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The tooth elements 20, 27 are on sleeves 17, 23 slidably splined one over the other and connected through separate fingers 19, 25 to separate springs 33, 34. The tooth elements 20, 27 thus move forward into the tooth spaces 2<1> in succession when such movement is possible, the secondmoving element filling the tooth space with a positive lock.
