Abstract

382,728. Heavy current switches. WEST & CO., Ltd., A., MALLOCH, R. M., and PADDOCK, W. J., Lewes Road, Brighton. Oct. 6, 1931, No. 27759. [Class 38 (v).] Pneumatic actuation.-In a pneumaticallyoperated contactor, in order to facilitate the inspection and cleaning of the contacts, the cylinder containing the operating piston to which the movable contact is attached is secured to the fixed structure of the contactor by means of a pivotal 'connection so that the cylinder may readily be swung about this pivotal connection. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cylinder 17 formed with a downwardlyextending lug 22 which is mounted to pivot about the rod 23 this rod being mounted in lugs 24 secured to the fixed structure. Within the cylinder is a piston 26 the piston-rod 25 being secured by a moulded connecting member 27 to the movable contact member which consists of a contact tip 18 carried by a bell crank 32 pivoted at 31 to a bracket 29 carried by the connecting member 27. The 'bell crank 32 is under the action of a spring 34 which ensures rolling contact during the engagement of the - tip 18 with the relatively fixed contact 3. Thus when the cylinder 17 is released by removing screws 24a and swung about the pivot pin 23, it carries'with it the whole of the movable contact structure Alternatively 'the 'pin 23 may be detached and the cylinder and movable contact structure completely detached. The movable contact carries an arcing tip 5b and a corresponding arcing tip 5a is mounted adjacent the fixed contact 3. A magnetic blow-out coil 4 is mounted above the contact structure and is arranged in series with the contacts. The arc is confined between insulating barriers and'side-plates 44, 45, 48. The movable contact in operation operates interlock contacts by carrying an insulating block fitted with contacts 39, 40 which are engaged by a relatively fixed springy contact in the " off " and" on positions of the main contact member. A depending arm 36 working in a slot 38 prevents the rotation of the' piston and moving contact member during operation. The fixed structure of the contactor is carried by a pair of vertical arms surrounded throughout a portion of their length by insulating sleeves 2.
