Abstract

408,084. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lawson, R. H. ; 55, Cooke Street, Pawtucket, and Cloutier, A. N. ; 495, Broad Street, Lonsdale, both in Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Feb. 3, 1933, No. 3365. Convention date, March 8, 1932. [Class 74 (ii).] Relates to a method of changing from rib to plain knitting upon a circular machine having an auxiliary thread feeder and knitting cams arranged at a position substantially diametrically opposite the main thread feeders and knitting cams. The rib knitting is performed by the dial needles 23 and the intermediate cylinder needles 41 at the auxiliary feeder 33, and after completion of the last rib course the dial needles 23 retain their loops until four courses, 47, 48, 49, 50 of plain knitting have been made. The courses 47, 49 are knitted at the auxiliary feeder, and the courses 48, 50 are knitted at the main feeder 17. At the next course 51, the cylinder needles corresponding to the rib needles hold their loops, and the rib needles knit, the loops 46 formed thereby being elongated by the rib needles taking up thread from the adjacent cylinder needle loops. A plain course 52 is then knitted by all the cylinder needles at the main feeder, and the dial needles continue to knit for one or more courses 53 to provide a tab or extension 15. The course 52 is followed by the plain courses 54 which constitute, e.g. the leg and foot of a stocking. The invention is described in connection with the knitting of a stocking or fabric having a selvage which does not curl or roll. Loopers' rounds 10 are knitted with a comparatively loose stitch, followed by accordion fabric 34. The last accordion course is knitted at the main feeder, and immediately after the loops have been drawn, the main yarn feeder is withdrawn, and the needles 41 intermediate of the rib needles receive thread and knit at the auxiliary feeder with the rib needles, the cylinder needles being actuated at the auxiliary feeder to cast off their loops. A pull course 11 is thus formed. Following the selvage course 42 a French welt 2, or a tuck, half-round, or a turned welt may be provided. Anti-ravel courses 64, Fig. 23, may be formed by causing the rib needles to knit the thread at the auxiliary feeder and all of the cylinder needles to knit at the main feeder.
