Abstract

376,679. Lubricating internal-combustion engines. DILKS, W. H., 1033, East 9th Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Feb. 27, 1932, No. 5923. [Class 12 (iii).] Lubricant is drawn into the induction manifold 11 of an internal-combustion engine from a reservoir 30 through a pipe 32 and a vacuum chamber 16, which latter has an air inlet 18, 24 which is normally closed by a ball valve 20 adjustably loaded by a spring 21 but which is opened when the vacuum in the chamber exceeds a predetermined maximum, so as to maintain the vacuum approximately constant. The chamber 16 is formed by a glass bell 15 mounted on a base 13, in which latter the passages 18, 24 are formed. The chamber 16 communicates with the manifold 11 through a minute passage 28 in the base, a passage 27, and a tube 26, and the pipe 32 has a fitting 33 secured in the base and is continued into the chamber 16 by a bent-over tube 36 which has a wire restriction 38 therein. Lubricant drips. from the tube 36 into a shallow recess at the top of the passage 18. Filtering material 35 is arranged within the fitting 33. The reservoir 30 may be either above or below the chamber 16, the restriction 38 preventing siphoning. Alternatively, the pipe 32 may lead from the engine crank-case, or, where the oil in the crank case is continually forced through a filter, the pipe 32 may lead from the return pipe from the filter.
