Abstract

Pistons.-In a lubricating system for internal-combustion engines and other machinery, a conduit B leading to the cylinder wall, communicates with the throat A<1> of a Venturi tube A through which oil in the system passes. When the oil is cold, as when starting the engine, its passage through the tube A is slow, so that oil enters the conduit B. As the oil becomes heated, however, the velocity of flow through the tube A increases, and ultimately the flow through the conduit B may reverse, causing excess oil, air, and other vapours collected in grooves in the cylinder to be drawn into the tube A. The conduit B may be provide with a regulating valve and is provided with an inturned lip B<1> at its connection to the throat A<1>, which lip may either oppose or lie in the same direction as the direction of flow through the tube A. The tube A may discharge into a chamber G having an overflow G<1>. When the oil is cold, the level in the chamber rises, causing a valve F controlled by a float E to obstruct the outlet from the tube. As shown in Fig. 5, the valve F is controlled by a diaphragm the space above which is connected to the engine induction pipe or to the engine exhaust. A spring is arranged to oppose the opening or the closing of the valve.
