Abstract

Cloth webs in strip form are continuously treated in apparatus comprising one or more <PICT:0895522/IV (c)/1> U-shaped containers, each constituted by a chamber which is continuously open and unpartitioned throughout the whole of its length, the cloth webs being introduced from above by way of an entry end of the container(s) and being withdrawn upwardly through an exit end of the container(s) there being provided at the entry end of the container(s) a folding device comprising two arms each of which is pivotally mounted on a seperate shaft. As shown, cloth 13 passes in turn between squeeze rolls 6, 7, beaters 8a and a folding device consisting of arms 9 mounted on shafts 10. Shafts 10 are associated with nozzled tubes which spray fresh water on to cloth 13 as it is laid in folds in U-shaped container(s). At the exit end of the U-shaped container(s) rods 15, beaters 8b and opening device 11 serve to separate cohering folds of cloth. A trough for draining water from the base of U-shaped container(s) may be provided with a swivelling exit or a flexible hose for control of the water level within the container(s).
