Abstract

362,985. Starting and stopping mechanism for yarn and like winding machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lewis, E. C. ; 65, Burnett Street, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Sept. 12, 1930, No. 27345. Convention date, April 7. [Class 120 (ii).] Starting, stopping, and braking mechanism for machines for winding yarn, wire or other strand material into cops, cones, coils, or other packages, comprises idler pulleys 57 adapted to engage a belt 55 with the pulleys 40 of winding-units and each controlled by means adapted to maintain the drive or to release it automatically, and, upon release, to apply a brake shoe 90 to the driven pulley 40, resilient means, such as a spring 85, being arranged between the brake 90 and its actuating-means so as to be flexed when the brake is applied and thereby to delay the release of the brake to ensure smooth starting. The pulley 57 is journalled in an arm 70 so as to tend to move under the action of gravity to apply the belt, and is operated to release the belt by means of a lever 75 fast on a rock shaft 76 carrying the brake lever and provided with a cam-face 79 to engage the arm 70 when rocked by a stopping and starting lever 95 fast on the shaft 76. A detent 107 on a lever 108 engages a catch 106 on an arcuate lever 100 fast on the shaft 76, and normally holds the lever 95 in position to maintain the drive, and is released upon breakage or failure in supply of the yarn by a bail 115 normally engaged by the yarn and adapted to engage a wheel 120 on the cam shaft. The bail 115 is pivoted on a quadrant 110 integral with the lever 108 and serving as a track for the dogging-mechanism of the traverse frame 27. An adjustable stop 125 on the quadrant is engaged by the traverse frame when the package is fully wound and thereby releases the detent mechanism. A spring 88 attached to the lever 75 effects the raising of the pulley 57 and the application of the brake when the detent mechanism is released. The lever 95 is provided with an extension 101 to engage flanges on the expansion means of the winding-spindle and thereby release and engage the cop tube when stopping and starting; this arrangement, the detent mechanism and the automatic stopping mechanism are in accordance with the usual practice in yarn-winding machines.
