Abstract
422,476. Winding wire &c. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO. & SMITHS, Ltd.. and WILDY, E. L., 7, Playhouse Yard, Golden Lane, London. July 12, 1933, No. 19735. [Class 120 (ii)] A machine for winding wire &c., comprises two spindles 2, 4, Figs. 1 and 2, for the supply and winding bobbins 3, 5 respectively, connected through a differential mechanism 6, and is characterised in that means actuated by the wire tension for retarding the speed of rotation of either of the spindles are associated with the differential mechanism so as continuously to control the relative speeds of the spindles 2, 4. Brake drums, 7, 8 are provided on the spindles 2, 4, the brake shoes 9, 10 being connected through rods 11, 12 to levers 13, 14 mounted on opposite sides of a rod 15. The wire 20 passes over pulley wheels 18, 19 carried on adjustable arms 16, 17 rigidly cormected to the rod 15. The differential casing is driven by means not shown. On starting to wind, the wire 20 is slack, the shaft 4 rotates freely but the brake shoe 9 retards the rotation of the shaft 2. As the shaft 4 rotates the tension in the wire 20 increases, the arms 16, 17 are drawn down against the spring 22 and the brake 9 released. Owing to the difference in diameter of the windings on the bobbins 3 and 5, the wire may tend to slacken but this is corrected by the arms 16, 17 rising causing the brake 9, 7 to retard the spindle 2 and simultaneously through the differential 6 to increase the speed of rotation of the spindle 4. As the diameter of the winding on the bobbin 5 increases, the wire 20 tightens, the arms 16, 17 move downwardly. and the brake 10, 8 retards the shaft 4, while the differential 6 increases the speed of rotation of the spindle 2. In a modification, spindles 24, 25, Figs. 3 and 4, for the supply and winding bobbins respectively are connected together to the driving shaft 26 through gear wheels 57, 58, 59, constituting part of the differential gear 27. Brake drums 28, 29 are mounted on the shafts 24, 25, and are provided with shoes 30, 31 formed as a unit and mounted on a rotatable shaft 32 which is connected by levers 33, 34, 35, to a fulcrum rod 36 having a block 38 rigid thereon, and carrying a lever 39, 40 which ie adjustable in the block 38, and a block 42 loose thereon and carrying a lever 43, 44 supporting a guide pulley 45. A spring 41 tends to pull the arm 40 upwardly, i.e. to apply the brake shoe 30 to the drum 28. The depending limb 46 of a T-shaped member is fixed on the arm 44, one arm 47 being adapted to engage the arm 40 while the other arm 48 is formed with an aperture 50 to accommodate a rod 51. The wire passes from the supply bobbin over the guide pulley 45, and the traverse guide pulley 62 to the winding bobbin. On starting to wind the spindle 24 is held by the brake shoe 30 acting on the drum 28. As the tension in the wire increases the arm 44 is pulled downwardly and the arm 47 engages the lever 40 thereby rotating the rod 36 and relieving the pressure of the shoe 30 so that the spindle 24 commences to rotate. If the tension in the wire increases the pulley 45 is pulled downwardly and the brake-shoe 31 acts to retard the spindle 25 while the differential mechanism 27 simultaneously increases the speed of rotation of the spindle 24. If the wire slackens the pulley 45 rises, and the opposite action takes place. If the wire breaks during winding or runs out, the pulley 45 is pulled upwardly by the spring 56, and, through the members 49, 54 lifts the rod 51 and operates the stop control mechanism 52, 53 to break the circuit of the motor driving the shaft 26.
