Abstract

355,136. Balancing reciprocating engines; flywheels. JUNKERS, H., 21, Kaiserplatz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. Nov. 17, 1930, No. 34571. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1929. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (iii).] In reciprocating engines with single crankshafts, or with two or more crank-shafts rotating in the same direction, the revolving flywheel masses are divided, and arranged on the crankshafts and auxiliary shafts geared thereto so as to revolve in opposite directions so that the sums of the moments of acceleration in the two directions are equal. The cylinder 1, Fig. 1, drives a shaft 5 with a flywheel 6 which is geared through pinions 7, 8 to a shaft 9 carrying a flywheel 10. The shafts turn with the same speed in opposite directions. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the pistons 11, 12 rotate the shafts 17, 18 with flywheel 31, 32 in the same direction, and these are geared to rotate the auxiliary shafts 27, 28 with flywheels 33, 34 in the opposite direction. The central, power-transmitting shaft 29 turns in the same direction as the crank-shafts. Arrangements of engines with parallel cylinders operating multiple crank-shafts are described, and arrangements wherein the flywheels themselves are geared. An arrangement is also described wherein one flywheel is geared to rotate in another flywheel on the crank-shaft.
