Abstract
339,955. Franks, E. A., and Nation, G. June 13, 1929. Variable-speed. ratchet gearing. - Co-axial pistons 3, 4 drive a crank shaft 9 through a rocking lever 7 and connecting rod 10; a direct drive is obtained to a cardan shaft 26 through spur gear 28, 27 and a clutch 30. Variable speed and reverse drive of the shaft 26 is effected through two sets of inter-geared ratchet wheels 20, 21 and 22, 23 which drive a lay shaft 19 connectable to the cardan shaft 26 by spur gear 24, 25 and the clutch 30. The sets of ratchet wheels are movable into and out of engagement with two sets of pawls 17, 17<1>, which are carried by discs 15, 16 oscillated from the rocking lever 7 through links 13, 14 and a block 11. This block is mounted on a screw 12 ; in its inner-most position the pawls 17, 17' are not oscillated a sufficient amount to cause the ratchet wheels to rotate, thereby giving a neutral position of the gear. In the outer-most position of the block, the gear ratio is designed to give a drive to the cardan shaft approximating to the direct drive. The screw 12 is turned by bevel gear from the normally stationary shaft 8 on which the lever 7 rocks; the lever carries two pawls 37, 38 to engage and drive the oppositely directed ratchet wheels on the shaft 8. Bowden wire controls are provided for the pawls; the block 11 carries stops 41, 42, one for each of the pawls, to bring the latter out of action in the limit positions of the block.
