Abstract

Variable-speed gearing comprises a cone of toothed gears 7, Fig. 1, adapted to coact with gears 18 slidable on their shafts 13, 14 to change the speed, the gears 7 being mounted to allow angular lost motion with respect to their common shaft 6 as shown in Fig. 3. Spaces 12 are left. The gear teeth are about 24 to the inch and are formed by a hardened cutter by rolling. The gears 18 are operated simultaneously from a control shaft 53. The shafts 13, 14 are geared to a clutch pinion 29, and forward and reverse driving is effected by shifting a double clutch 33 upon its shaft 24. Wheels 7, 22, 40, 41 are preferably left soft, the wheels 18, 28, 29, 42 being hardened.
