Abstract

Variable-speed and reversing ratchet gearing comprises a driving eccentric B, a variable lever linkage A, E, ratchet mechanism F, and an epicyclic reversing train g<2>, g<3> all arranged coaxially about the crank-shaft of an internalcombustion engine. The eccentric B secured to a fly-wheel C gives an invariable, rocking motion to a. lever A the pivot a<1> of which is fixed upon a rigid frame member a<2>. A fiddle-shaped double rack E is articulated to a slide a<3>, which is movable along the lever A by a suitable hand control K. The variable reciprocating motion of the rack E is converted into variable rotary motion of a central spider G by the ratchet pinions F, which work alternately. An arm g<1> extending from the spider G carries planet gears g<2>, g<3> meshing with sun gears upon loose drums AA, BB, respectively. Forward driving is obtained from the drum AA, through a suitable clutch. Reversed driving is obtained by holding the drum BB by a brake. Specification 28347/06 is referred to.
