Abstract

338,271. Brown, A. A. Sept. 18, 1929. Fittings, internal.-A box for a single electric lamp &c. has an internal liner for all the sides of the box, the liner being creased, corrugated, or scored transversely between its ends to enable it to be deformed by endwise pressure and grip the article in the box; openings are provided at the corners of the liner so that the sides yield or buckle inwards under the endwise pressure, the liner thus adapting itself to the size and shape of the article. As shown in Fig. 1 the liner 16 is made of corrugated cardboard and is creased across the corrugations 16<a> to form the corners of the liner where portions are cut away to form openings 17. The length of the liner is slightly greater than the length of the box minus the depth of a flanged apertured platform 19 in which the lamp bulb 18 is suspended so that, when the lamp is placed in the liner with the platform 19 resting on the top edges of the latter, and the flaps 14, 15 of the box are closed, the platform 19 is pressed down and deforms the liner, the sides of which buckle inwards and press yieldingly against the bulb 18. The position and shape of the openings 17 are determined by the size and shape of the article to be enclosed in the liner and the openings 17<a> Fig. 6, may also be formed near the upper end of the liner to support the cap portions of a lamp bulb or thermionic valve. The platform 19 may be formed in one with the liner or it may be dispensed with and the liner deformed by confining it between the bottom and closing flaps of the box and in this case the liner may be fixed to the box at parts which are not required to buckle inwards. The liner may be deformed by a pair of end flaps on the box which are turned in to lock with the cap of the lamp bulb &c. or the locking flaps may be formed on the liner and engaged bv the closing flaps of the box: one or more elastic bands may be fitted around the liner to increase its resilience.
