Abstract
333,658. Triggs, W. W., (Norton Co.). May 29, 1929. Rasping-apparatus. - A grinding wheel comprises a plurality of abrasive segments forming an abrasive annulus and has between a segment and another part of the wheel a deformable and distortable material which keeps the segments rigidly in position and permits an abnormal expansion thereof. As shown applied to a stone for grinding wood pulp, the abrasive segments 10 are secured to a drum 11 by wedge-blocks 12 and bolts 22, the wedge blocks 12 bearing on lead or babbit-metal strips 16. The segments are separated by cork strips 26 which are perforated so that the filler such as lead, babbit-metal, a mixture of sulphur and coke &c. may form little posts 28 which, during normal use, serve to take the lateral thrust and to hold the segments in position whilst, when the wheel expands abnormally, these posts will yield and permit the segments to approach each other. Similarly a shoe 18, of metal or cement, is moulded or cast onto the bottom of the segment and engages the drum 11. The bolts 22 may be made of elastic material and are initially stressed so that the blocks 12 engage with the shoulders of the segments when the wheel contracts. The space 31 around the bolts 22 is filled with cement a packing strip 29, of cork, and 31, of rubber, permitting the expansion of the segments. Specifications 238,176 and 285,331 are referred to
