Abstract

774,032. Piston-rings; stuffing-box substitutes. GOETZEWERKE F. GOETZE AKT.- GES. March 9, 1955 [March 11, 1954], No. 6923/55. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing - ring, applicable to pistons or stuffing-boxes and constructed of steel, cast-iron, bronze or other non-ferrous material, has a circular back part 4 adapted to fit in a corresponding groove 2 and a flange 5 which is inclined towards the space to be sealed so that the pressure of the medium to be sealed acts to turn the ring about its section, thus pressing the face 6 on the surface to be sealed and pressing the back part into the groove. By making the ring of sufficiently elastic material and of open section, as shown for a piston in Fig. 7, the sealing effect is increased by spreading of the ring section. The ring 11 is a scraper ring and has axial passages 12 so that some lubricant can reach the rings above it. For sealing in two directions, rings or groups of rings may be fitted with their inclined faces pointing in opposite directions.
