Abstract

Tobacco-feeding machines.-In a tobacco-feeding machine having a carded roller 14 and a picker roller 21 for removing the tobacco from the carded roller, the picker roller rotates in such a direction as to discharge the stream of tobacco over the picker roller and away from the carded roller, and at such a speed as to winnow the tobacco stream. As shown, the machine comprises a hopper 10 having a downwardly inclined shelf 13 and belt 11 feeding the tobacco to the top of the roller 14. A dressing roller 18 and a fan 20 are provided, and the roller 14 is enclosed by a shield 22. The picker roller 21, a spring- pressed comb 24, and an adjustable guide plate 27 are arranged below the belt 11. The picker roller 21 comprises picker pins 55 mounted on the edge of winnowing vanes 51, which throw the undesired heavier particles into a removable drawer 28 on a shelf 30. The leading faces 52 of the vanes have a backward rake, and the faces 57 are streamlined. The picker pins may be shaped as shown in Fig. 6, with a cylindrical part 60 fitted in the vanes, and a tapered extension 61 with a convex rear face 63 and a chamfered end 65. In a modification, Fig. 7, the pins are of polygonal section. The tobacco 36 is thrown on a belt 37 which conveys it to the shoot 39 for the cigarette paper. In a modification, the picker roller throws the tobacco on to one of a series of carded rollers rotating in a direction opposite to that of the roller 14 and each provided with a picker roller, comb, and guide plate similar to 21, 24, 27.
