312,259. Lomonossoff, G. V., and Kapitza, P. Dec. 20, 1927. Divided on 308,329. Electromagnets. - An electromagnet, such as that used in connection with the brake described in Specification 308,329, is provided with opposed pole faces having between them a space long in comparison to its width, in which a projection on the armature moves at right angles to the normal direction of the lines of force, so that the tractor force is approximately constant throughout the stroke. In the arrangement shown the slot 32<a> between the pole pieces is of annular form and the armature 2 is formed as a disc with a flange 32 entering the slot 32<a>. The disc 2 may extend beyond the flange 32, as shown at 32<b>, so that when the stroke is complete the armature may be held in position by a current less than the actuating-current, or a special holding-on coil 34 may be provided for this purpose. By shaping the flange 32 appropriately the tractive force can be made to vary with the stroke in accordance with any desired law.
