Guards.-In order to provide greater protection for the grinding-wheels of tool-sharpening machines of the kind in which the grinding-wheel spindle a is carried by a swivelling-head b in an open-fronted casing c, wheel guards are so carried by the head as to be capable of axial, radial, or angular adjustment or any combination of these adjustments. As applied to the machine described in Specification 295,169, [Class 60, Grinding or abrading &c.], the cast or pressed guard g covering half of each wheel h is adjustably secured by a slotted lug g<1>, Figs. 1 and 2 to a perpendicularly-slotted lug d<2> on the work-rest supporting-arm d, which is angularly adjustable about the spindle bearing e by means of a slotted lug d<1> clamped to the head b. The lugs g<1> may be radial and be bolted to radially-slotted lugs on the arms d, to allow radial and swivelling movements of the guards, angular adjustment being obtained by movement of the arms d and axial adjustment by packing-pieces on the bolts. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which each guard g is bolted to the slotted flange i<1> of an intermediate member having a curved slot in its flange i, which is bolted to a radial slot in an extension d<3> of the arm d. In another form (not shown), the guards are carried by axially or radially slotted brackets integral with or attached to the head b, an intermediate member being provided if angular adjustment is required.
