Second, toprovide in a grinderzof. this type ,a guard which is automatically adjusted withther wheel housing as the wheel housing is adjusted to accommodate any grinding wheel and as the wheel housingis adjusted to compensate for wear of the gr-nding wheel. and 4. By thus mounting the guard d sk, it does I also preferably embody in this combinationr a splash guard and tool guard of the type generally illustrated in my Patent 2,292,229, issued August 4, 1942. r
In this embodiment, the guard or shield comprises an arcuate por-tion Il disposed axially of f the grinding Wheel and an arcuate flange-like portion I3 disposed radially on the inner side of the depending front Wall I3. The inner edge of this arcuate portion I3 constitutes a track which engages the rollers I9 whereby the shield is oscillatinglyv supported, the handle 2i! for effecting this adjustment being pivoted on the depending bracket 2l and projecting through the slot 22 on the bracket or hanger.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the shield is carried by an arm 23 which is drectly pivoted on the bracket 24, the hand-piece 25 being secured to this arm. In this embodiment, the guard 26 corresponding -to the guard Id is secured to the bracket 21 corresponding to the bracket ZI by the screw 28. The guard ZSis, in this embodiment, supported in al`gnment with the aXis of the Wheel instead of at one side thereof as is shown in the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 3. However, the general relationship of the parts is the same.
In Fig- 4, I illustrate a grinding wheel that is substantially worn away and ths in comparison with Fig. 2 illustrates the manner in which the guard isfadjusted relative to the grinding wheel. It bears the same relation to the grinding Wheel in al1 positions of adjustment. Even careless use or manipulat'on is guarded against as, for example, in the event the workman did not adjust the Wheel hood or housing in proper relationship by the relationship of the Work supporting table to the wheel.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, the skirt or lower portion of splash guard I1 terminates in a rearwardly inclined bottom edge I 1l oiset inwardly at |12 providing a drip or flow directing semi-trough. The fluid is effectively directed away from the work and work table which is of substantial advantage.
Y I have illustrated and` described my invention in very practical commercial embodiments thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or described certain other embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled inthe art to eiectively adapt or embody my invention to different types of structures of grinding machines emsaid grinding wheel and having a part depending in front of the upper portion of the grinding wheel, and a guard disk mounted on the inner side of said depending part of said wheel housing and positioned within said annular grinding wheel with its edges closely adjacent to but spaced ploying annular grinding wheels. Further, I have illustrated and described only such portions of a grinding machine as seem` to me to be desirable for a full understanding of my invention and practical adap-tations thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel provided with a supporting web at the inner end thereof, of a wheel housing overhanging and mounted for adjustment axially of said grinding wheel andhaving a front wall depending in front of the upper portion of the grinding wheel, a work table `operatively associated with said grinding wheel, a guard disk mounted on the inner side of said wheel housing front wall and positioned within -said annular grinding wheel with its edges closely adjacent to but spaced from the inside thereof, an arcuate shield disposed within said housing and comprising an arcuate axially projecting flange prtion and a radial flange disposed between the front wall of said housing and said guard disk and supported on said front wall for angular adj-ustment within the housing andv for adjustment relative to said work table.
2. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel provided with a supporting web at the inner end thereof, of a wheel housing overhanging .and mounted for adjustment axially of said grinding wheel and having a front wall depending in front of the upper portion of the grinding wheel, a work table operatively associated with said grinding Wheel, and a guard disk mounted on the inner side of said Wheel housing front wall and positioned within said annular grinding Wheel with its edges closely adjacent toV but spaced from the inside thereof.
3. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel, of awheel housing overhanging and mounted for adjustment axially of said grinding wheel and having a part depending in front of the upperportion of the grinding wheel, a guard-disk mounted on the inner side of said depending part of said wheel housing and positioned within said annular grinding wheel with its edges closely adjacent to but spaced from the inside thereof, an arcuate shield disposed within said housing and comprising an arcuate axially projecting ilange portion and a radial flange 'disposed between the front wall of said housing and said guard disk and supported on said front wall for axial adjustment within the housing. i
4. In a grinder, the combination withl an annular grinding wheel. of a wheel housing overhanging and mounted for adjustment axially of from the inside thereof.
5. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel, of a wheel housing mounted for adjustment axially of the wheel and comprising a front wall depending in front of the wheel, and a guard disk mounted on the inner side of said housing to depend below-said housing front wall and positioned within said grinding wheel with its edges peripherally adjacent to but spaced therefrom.
6, In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel, of a wheel housing comprising a portion depending in front of the wheel, and a vguard disk mounted on said depending part of said housing and positioned within said grinding wheel with its edges peripherally adjacent to but spaced therefrom.
, 7. In a grinder, thel combination with an annular grinding wheel provided with a supporting web at the inner end thereof, of a wheel housing provided with a part depending in front of said wheel, said wheel housing being mounted for adjustment axially of the wheel, and a guard disk mounted on said depending part of said Wheelhousing and supported thereby within said grinding wheel adjacent the grinding face thereof and adjustable within said grinding wheel with the axial adjustment of said wheel housing.
8. In a grinder, the combination of an annular-grinding wheel, a wheel housing mounted for adjustment axially of said wheel, a guard member mounted on said housing for adjustment therewith and disposed Within said grinding wheel, and a work table adjustably associated with said grinding wheel.
9. In a grinder, the combination of an annular grinding wheel, a Wheel housing mounted for adjustment axially of said wheel, and a guard member mounted on said housing for adjustment therewith and disposed within said grinding whe'el.-
10. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel, of a wheel housing mounted for adjustment axially of the wheel, and a guard disk mounted on said wheel housing and supported thereby within said grinding wheel adjacent the grinding face thereof and adjustable with said grinding wheel housing.
11. In a grinder, the combination of an annular `grinding wheel, a Wheel housing, and a guard member mounted on said housing and disposed within said grinding wheel.
12. In a grinder, the combination with an annular grinding wheel, of a wheel housing, and
a guard member mounted on said housing and positioned Within said grinding wheel with its edges peripherally adjacent to but spaced therefrom.
13. The combination with a reversible fluid supplied grinding wheel, of a wheel housing having openings therein at the opposite sides of the wheelyand a shield comprising a curved portion embracingja substantial portion of the periphery of .the grinding wheel and mounted for pivotal .adjustment concentrically of the wheel, said shield having a skirt portion terminating ln inturned rearwardly inclined bottom edges.
