Abstract

637,666. Grinding lenses &c. TAYLOR, D. July 8, 1947, No. 17958. [Class 60] In a method and apparatus for grinding a compound surface on workpieces, such as toric lenses, the lenses 6 are carried on a rotating drum 2 and a grinding wheel 1 is traversed across them in a plane tangential to the drum and in a direction at right angles to the rotation of the drum, the axis of rotation 3 of the wheel being inclined to the direction of traverse and the wheel contour being shaped in accordance with this inclination. The surface of the wheel is initially formed by a tool having the required curvature of the lens to be ground and the rotating wheel is traversed across the tool in the same way as during actual use. The apparatus described comprises a plate 7 for attachment to the slide of a milling machine which carries the drum 2 on its spindle 13, the plate carrying the grinding wheel 1 and its driving motor 11 and being locked, after adjustment about a pivot below the centre of the grinding wheel, by means of bolts in slots 12.
