Abstract

Norias.-Water-lifting apparatus comprises a number of curved vanes 12 - - 15 mounted between two rotating side walls 7, which are provided with delivery apertures 8 having a diameter equal to at least half the diameter of the walls. The apparatus may be rotated by a windmill through gearing 19, 20. The water enters each vane in turn and is lifted and discharged through the holes 8 into a conduit 24. If the apparatus is used for lifting water from a low level to sea level, a curved valve 26 is secured to a stationary shaft 17 to prevent the sea water, which enters the rotor through the conduit 24 and aperture 8, from passing into the vanes. In the form shown in Fig. 5, hinged non- return valves 29 control the flow from the vanes to the discharge chamber. In another form, the inner ends of the vanes project inside the edge of the orifice 8 as far as the fixed shaft 7, and the orifice 8 is closed by a fixed plate provided with a curved recess.
