[Class 110 (i).] A centrifugal pump, adapted particularly for draining swamps, comprises an impeller 21 mounted on the lower end of a vertical shaft 16 within a casing 1, the latter having a lateral opening 3 below the water level 50, and carrying at its upper end a downwardly curved discharge branch 5 fitted with an air relief valve 44, butterfly valve 46 and flap valve 48. The casing 1 is formed of two interfitting parts 2, 4, the socket 6 on the part 2 providing a seating for a ring 7 to which a spider 10, carrying a bearing 15 for the shaft 16, is secured by pins 12. The impeller comprises an upper disc 22 secured to the shaft 16 and carrying tangential blades which extend in an outwardly inclined direction to a lower ring 26. The shaft 16 is connected to an upper shaft 29 by a coupling 28, comprising similar members 31, 32, Fig. 2, clamped together and to the shafts by bolts 37, the shaft 29 extending upwardly through a gland bearing 39 and carrying a driving pulley 30. The relief valve 44 is mounted on the cover 42 of a man-hole 41 which is provided in the branch 5 adjacent the casing 1 to permit disconnection of the coupling 28 and removal of the shaft 16 and impeller 21. In operation, the butterfly valve 46 is kept closed until the whole of the air confined within the casing 1 and branch 5 is expelled through the relief valve 44, after which the valve 46 is opened to allow the water to escape from the outlet 45. The flap 48 prevents backflow when the pump is stopped.
