Abstract

298,047. Eder, M. W. March 31, 1928. Guarding against unauthorized use.-The steering wheels 3 may take up two positions, in the lower of which (shown on the left of the Figure) it engages the steering column, while in the upper it rotates idlv thereon. The hub of the wheel is formed with internal teeth 9, which, in the lower position engage external teeth 10 on a flange 2 secured to the column 1. The wheel is locked in one position or the other by means of a toothed ring 12 operated by a key k through toothed wheels 15, 16. If the teeth of the ring cover the recesses between the teeth 10 the wheel 3 cannot be moved axially. In a modified construction the wheel hub and flange 2 are formed with two sets of teeth.
