Abstract

Guarding against unauthorized use.- The object is to render the hand steering-wheel of the vehicle temporarily inoperative during the driver's absence, and it comprises means for engaging and disengaging the hand-wheel with the steering-rod under the control of combination mechanism. The device, as shown in Fig. 2, consists mainly of an apertured barrel 15, forming part of the steering- wheel arms 13, surrounding a core 28. The core is connected with the steering-rod 31, and contains apertures 29, corresponding to those in the barrel, into which spring-controlled pins 17 may be forced by the cam-shaped sides of a cam-cup 33, fitting concentrically about the barrel. When the pins are " in, " the steering-wheel is operative, and vice versa. The rotatable cam-cup is locked or unlocked either in the position in which the pins are in or in the position in which the pins are out by a combination device consisting of the cup, the rotatable cap 42, and the grooved spring- controlled bolt 37. Fig. 4 shows the cam-pins 17 engaged in the core holes. The cam-cup and the rotatable cap each have rings engaging with notches in the spring-controlled bolt, the rings being notched so that only in one position of the cap, and the cup, can the bolt be withdrawn to permit the cam cup to be rotated for operating the pins.
