Abstract

The system includes a lower steering column boss 1 which is bolted to the bottom of the housing cylinder 6. The steering wheel shaft 2 has splines on the bottom that locates into the lower steering column boss 1. The locking mechanism carrier is also bolted to the housing cylinder 6. The carrier 3 also has a locking slide 4 incorporated which locks into grooves in the steering wheel shaft 2 which is located centrally by locking mechanism 3 and top housing plate 5 which is bolted to the housing cylinder 6. These components are all protected by the outer sheath 7 which bolts to the top housing plate.

Description

S.W.I.S.
This invention relates to a steering wheel immobilising system.
Steering wheel locks are fitted to motorised vehicles and locks the steering wheel to deter unwanted guests from taking the vehicle. This system enables you to disengage the steering wheel from the steering column, So it will rotate without turning the steering column, so enhance the performance of present steering locks., and will render the vehicle immobilised even through towing away.
Figure 1 Shows in perspective, the steering wheel engaged to the steering column.
Figure 2 illustrates how the steering wheel is disengaged from the steering column.
In order to disengage the steering wheel from the steering column, you have to first unlock the tumbler lock which disengages the locking slide 4 from the steering wheel shaft 2. This enables you to pull the steering wheel shaft 2 6mm. This shaft is secured in a central position via Top housing plate 5 and locking mechanism Carrier 3.
The steering wheel shaft 2 has now been disengaged from lower steering column boss 1 which is located to the vehicle steering column.
Once this procedure has been done you have to now lock the tumbler lock, which now engages locking slide 4 back into steering wheel shaft 2 and renders the steering wheel immobilised.
The steering shaft 2 will now rotate within the assembly cylinder 6.
The Outer casing 7 deters any tampering of the system.
To re-engage the steering wheel with the steering column the steps described above are to be carried out in the reverse sequence.

Claims (6)

  1. Claims 1. A S.W.I.S. is used in conjunction with a standard vehicle steering locking system to deter any unwelcome person from taking the vehicle without the necessary keys.
  2. 2. The S.W.I.S. as claimed in Claim 1 disengages the steering wheel from the steering column thus unabling the vehicle to be steered.
  3. 3. The S.W.I.S. as in Claim 1 or Claim 2 works on a spline system to engage the steering and will not alter the steering geometry so will enable steering to be used as usual under normal circumstances.
  4. 4. The S.W.I.S. as claimed in any preceding Claim has an outer sheath to protect against any unwelcome tampering.
  5. 5. The S.W.I.S. as claimed in any preceding Claim which is made from a combination of light alloy and steel to enable security and strength.
  6. 6. The S.W.I.S. substantially as herein, described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
