Abstract

Tunnels.-In a reinforcing structure for mine tunnels, &c., comprising arcuate concrete &c. sections side by side, the sections being segmental and having yielding material in some or all joints, guiding means are provided between adjacent segments to permit relative circumferential movement but not substantial relative radial movement. In Fig. 1, adjacent ring segments 1 are relatively guided by telescoping tubes 3, 4 or by H-shaped members 5 embracing the ends of the sectors, or both; wood insertions 2 are placed in those joints in which yielding under pressure is to be allowed for, the insertions engaging the web of the corresponding member 5 to hold the latter centrally in the joint. In Fig. 5, the roof of a tunnel &c. is supported by a vaulted structure built of annular sectors with wood insertions 18 and guiding means 17 similar to the guiding means 3, 4, Fig. 1, the structure being supported by wood, masonry, or concrete pillars 11, spaced apart or placed close together and braced by wedges 12; sheet metal caps 13 engage the upper ends of the pillars 11 and the outer ends of the outer sectors, and are connected by splices 13<c>, a plug 15 also connecting the parts. Guiding means similar to the guiding means 5, Fig. 1, may replace, or be used together with. the guiding means 17.
