Abstract
652,701. Mine roof supports. ETUDES ET RECHERCHES INDUSTRIELLES ET SCIENTIFIQUES, E.R.I.S. March 15, 1948, Nos. 7782 and 7783. Convention dates, March 20, 1947 and March 9, 1948. [Class 20(ii)] A supporting system for mine &c. roofs comprises a succession of links S<SP>1</SP>-S<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 9, detachably hinged to each other in chain formation and adapted to be locked together to form a rigid beam which is supported against the roof by props E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP>. The arrangement is such that as the working face F<SP>1</SP>, recedes, links S', S<SP>2</SP> &c. are detached in turn from one end of the chain and joined up with the link S" at the working face so that these can be locked in the support position. Alternatively an endless chain of links may be used. Each link comprises a main: body of I-shaped cross-section having a web 11, Fig. 1 and upper and lower flanges 11(a), 11(b), the latter having housings 12 to receive projections provided on the head of the prop. The main body is extended at one end by a web 13, Figs: 1, 2, and at the opposite end by a yoke 14 adapted to receive between its arms the web 13 of an adjacent link. The two arms of the yoke, shaped at their lower ends as shown in Fig. 1, are connected by a spindle 15 and have openings 16, 17 assuming together the shape of a wedge. The terminal web 13 is formed with a hook 21 adapted to engage the spindle 15 of an adjacent link and has a wedge-shaped opening 20 which is adapted to be in register with the openings 16, 17 of the yoke of an adjacent link. Locking between two adjacent links is effected by a wedge C, Fig. 8, which passes through the openings 16, 17, 20, the arrangement being such that the wedge can assume any intermediate position between the extreme positions C<SP>1</SP> and C<SP>2</SP> in which positions the upper flange 11a of one link assumes with the upper flange of its adjacent link an angle of 5 degrees directed either upwardly or downwardly. This permits the chain of supporting links to be in close contact along its length with an uneven roof.
