Abstract

276,303. Meyer, F., and Spanner, H. J. Aug. 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.-In rectifiers with an incandescent cathode and a number of anodes, reverse discharges and discharges between the anodes are prevented by plates between the anodes at a distance from them equal to, or a small multiple of, the mean free electron path in the gas. The plates may be of insulating material or, in rectifiers for lower voltages, of thin insulated metal or silvered insulating material, the latter being used particularly in small rectifiers with gas purified by a getter. The cathode 1, Fig. 2, may be between plates 3 between two anodes 2 or, for lower voltages, above a single plate between the anodes. A cylindrical container 6, Fig. 6, may be divided by insulating plates 3 into as many compartments as there are anodes 2. the gap between the container and the plates being small so that the container assists in the screening of the anodes. The cathode may be arranged in the free space above the anodes, straight lines between the cathode and each anode not intersecting the screens in rectifiers for lower voltages but intersecting a transverse extension of the screen in high-voltage rectifiers. In rectifiers for high currents and voltages, each anode is flat and has screening plates on both sides, the cathode being between or above the anodes.
