Abstract

488,209. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 2, 1937, No. 124. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In a gas or vapour filled arc discharge de vice provided with in termediate electrodes 2 3, 4, Fig. 1, which are connected to points or a potential divider formed e.g. by conden sers 12 .. 15, connected between the anode 1 and the cathode, the intermediate electrodes have openings the length of which is a multiple of the width so that the number of charge carriers penetrating therethrough is not sufficient to start the main discharge at the commencement of the burning period, and means, associated with each electrode 2, 3, 4, are provided for producing an auxiliary discharge to start the main discharge. The auxiliary discharges may be produced between the electrodes 2, 3, 4 and anodes 5, 6, 7 by a high-frequency potential supplied thereto through transformers 18, or a high-frequency discharge may be produced by means of an external coil. The electrodes are insulated by cylinders 8, sealed bv rubber, and may consist of metal or of graphite. Resistances may be connected in parallel with the condensers 12 .. 15 and the length of the openings may be three or ten times the width thereof.
