Abstract

Auxiliary gear rods; stroke, varying; regulating delivery by opening by-passes.-In a fuel pump for internal-combustion engines, the fuel is delivered by the plunger 13 past a valve 19 into a chamber 20, from which part of it passes by a pipe 6 to the engine while the remainder is by-passed through a valve 21 and pipe 22. The valve 21 is opened at a variable point in the delivery stroke by a lever 23 operated by the plunger driven through links 27, 25 and carrying an adjustable screw 29 which opens the valve when the lever 23 engages a fulcrum roller 24. The roller 24 is carried by an arm 28 which may be rocked by governor or hand to vary the position of the roller and thereby the moment at which the valve 21 is opened. A rod 30 on the arm 28 engages a pin 31 on the lever 23 and holds the valve 21 permanently open when the roller 24 is moved to its limit. The roller 24 may be moved out of alignment with the lever 23 if it is desired to keep the valve 21 permanently closed. The arm 28 may be rocked by a governor 34 through rod 35 and arms 36, or by a hand-wheel 12 and linkwork 38, 39. The pump may be operated by a hand lever 17 resting on an adjustable stop 17<a> which limits the return stroke.
