Abstract

Bed-reciprocating apparatus. - In printing- machines in which the bed is reciprocated by crank-mechanism, cam-actuated means are provided to vary the action of the crank-mechanism so as to cause the bed to move in unison, during the printing operation, with the uniformly revolving cylinder. As applied to a machine in which a crank-pin 8, Fig. 1, operates a connecting-rod 7 which reciprocates a gear-wheel or pair of sectors 3, 3a over a rack 5 and reciprocates the bed at twice the speed of reciprocation of the sectors 3, 3a by the engagement of the upper sector 3 with a rack 4 on the bed, the rack 5, instead of being stationary, is given a reciprocating motion by a lever 14 operated by a revolving cam 15 on the shaft 10<a> of the crank-pin 8. This crank-pin 8 is carried by two coaxial gear wheels 9a. The rack 5 is adjustably connected to the lever 14, and is fitted with anti-friction rollers guided by bearings 6 which can be raised or lowered to keep the rack in mesh with the gear 3. In a modification, Fig. 5, the bed is reciprocated by a link 19 and lever 18 operated by a crank-pin 8 and rod 7, and the motion given to the bed is modified by mounting the pivot 18a of the lever 18 on a lever 16a which is oscillated by a cam 15. To ensure correct register of the cylinder and bed should the cam parts wear, a sector gear 31 driven from gear 9a engages a rack on the bed during the printing-operation, the impression cylinder 34 being driven from the gear 9a.
