260,544. Newport Co., (Assignees of Gubelmann, I.). Nov. 2, 1925, [Convention date]. 1 : 4-Dihydroxy-2 (or 3-) chloranthraquinone is obtained by condensing 3: 4-dichlorphenol with phthalic anhydride in the presence of concentrated or fuming sulphuric acid and boric acid. 2-Hydroxy-4 : 5-dichlor-o-benzoylbenzoic acid is first formed, ring closure to the anthaquinone derivative taking place when the temperature reaches 200‹ C.
