Abstract
248,018. Brunton, J. L., and Brunton Bros., Ltd. Sept. 24, 1924. Operating doors hydraulically and by toothed-gear mechanism and chain and cord arrangements. -Watertight doors of ships are operated by a cylinder to which pressure fluid (e.g. boiler-feed water) is supplied by a valve controlled through a Bowden cable device from either of two positions (e.g. a local and distant station). Fluid pressure is supplied through a valve casing 6 to pipes 7 or 8 of the cylinder 4, which contains a piston for moving a sliding door 1. Local hand-operated gear 30 - - 34 is also provided. The differential valve piston 10 has a spindle 11 connected ta a lever 12 movable about the end of a link 13, and this lever is connected by a link 29 with an abutment 28. Between this abutment and the fixed abutment 27 is the outer casing 26 of a Bowden mechanism, the inner inextensible cable 24 leading to a distant control, such as on the bridge of the ship, and at its lower end to a handle 25, convenientlv located near the door 1. When the handle 25 and the distant control are secured by means of a bracket 25<1>, so that the piston is in the lower position as shown, pressure fluid from the pipe 5 passes through a passage (not shown) to the upper part of the valve casing and thence through the port 15 and pipe 7 to maintain the door in the raised position, the pipe 8 being put to exhaust through the port 19 and pipe 9. When the cable 24 is released from the bracket 25<1> or from the distant control, the casing 26 is free to flex and the piston 10 rises owing to the greater pressure exerted on its lower end. Pressure fluid then passes to the upper end of the piston 4 and the door closes. The door may be again opened by pulling the cable 24. The Bcwden cable operating mechanism may be of the kind described in Specification 205,844, [Class 80 (iii) Link-work &c.], and the piston 10 is preferably supplied with packing.
