Abstract

171,454. Anderson, H. P. H. Aug. 10, 1920. Operating doors hydraulically and by screw-and-nut mechanism.-When hydraulic power is in use to move a piston - operated bulkhead door the hand-gear is non-operative, but should the pressure fluid be cut off or fail the halves of a nut carried by the door are automatically brought into engagement with a screwed shaft for manually operating the door. The fluid pressure is admitted from one of the mains 17, 18 through a local hand-operated valve control device 1 to the cylinders 23, 24 containing respectively pistons 46, 44 having piston-rods 26, 27 attached to the upper ends by bracket members 26<1> to the door 25. On the door is mounted a casing containing the halves 30 of a nut, which are forced apart against the action of springs 31 by a lever 32 while the door is operable hydraulically. In the valve casing 1 are pistons 8, 10, the rods 7 of which are secured to a hand-lever 12. By adjusting this lever, the pistons are operated so that the pressure and exhaust mains 17, 18 communicate through suitable ports and passages in the valve casting, and the pipes 21, 22, with the upper and lower sides of the pistons, thus operating the door. The piston-rods are tubular, the rod 26 having an orifice 45 on the upper side of the piston 46, the piston-rod 27 communicating with the lower side of the piston 44, as shown. Fluid pressure thus passes either from the upper or lower side respectively of the. pistons 46, 44 through pipes 42 or 43 to act on one or other of the piston members 37. These pistons are arranged on either side of a lever 36, which is connected to the arm 32 arranged between the halves 30 of the nut for engaging the shaft 28, by means of which the door is manually operable. By this arrangement, when fluid pressure is acting to move or maintain the door in the open or closed position, the lever 36 is operated by one or other of the piston members 37 to keep the handgear for the door non-operable, but when the pressure fails or is cut off the pressure under the sides of the pistons 37 is equalized through a passage 38, and the springs then move the parts 30 of the cut into engagement with the shaft 28.
