Abstract

513,700. Grab-buckets. WILLIAMS, J. C. April 13, 1938, No. 11423. [Class 78 (iv)] In a grab for submarine use, the bucket is closed on reaching the sea bed by means of a prime mover actuated by the pressure of the surrounding water. In the embodiment shown the prime mover consists of a piston- and-cylinder unit 30, 21. When the grab rests on the sea bed, the hoisting cable 27 becomes slack and a spring 28 depresses a plunger 26 attached to the cable, and through rods 24, 25 opens a valve 23 to allow water to enter the cylinder 21 and force the piston 30 upwards. Racks 31 carried by the piston move upwards and by engagement with gears 32 rotate cranks 34 connected by links 35 to the bucket parts 10 to close the bucket. When the cable is now brought taut, the valve 23 is closed by the rod 24 and the bucket held closed until it is withdrawn from the water and the valve opened by a hand lever 37. Water then drains from the cylinder through the port 22 and the bucket is opened by counterweights 38. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 5, the valve 23 is opened as the bucket approaches the sea bed by a plunger 41 co-operating with a valve lever 43 and provided with a shoe 45. To assist opening of the bucket a tank 39 is connected to the cylinder by a pipe 40, and to assist the closing of the bucket and to release the bucket should it encounter a projecting rock or a wreck this tank is connected to an air pump 54 and the cylinder also connected to a liquid pump 56 by a hose 55. A valve 58 in the hose may be controlled manually by means of a cable or automatically by means of a roller 64 engaging a cam 62 attached to one of the racks 31. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the grab may be released at any time by opening a valve 48 by means of a cable 50 to allow water to drain from the cylinder to a tank 46, and the closing of the bucket may be assisted by connecting a pipe 51 to a pressure pump. To effectively seal the bucket when it is closed, one of its jaws is provided with a rubber tube 13 with which the other jaw, 14, co-operates. This tube contains water maintained at a pressure greater than that of the water surrounding the grab by means of a spring-pressed plunger 17 in a cylinder 16 connected to the tube by a pipe 15 and communicating with the surrounding water through a port 20.
