Abstract
240,470. Hickman, W. A. Sept. 25, 1924, [Convention date]. Screw propellers. - A hydroplane or high speed motor boat having a hull formed to produce a rearwardly directed rising wave has its semi-submerged propeller placed beyond the stern at a position approximating to the crest of the wave. Deflector plates may be attached to the stern to divide the wave and keep it clear of the shaft and propeller boss. The hull 7, Fig. 1, has an inverted V-shaped bottom 9 gradually flattening toward the aft end and carries on a framework the semi-submerged propeller 15, the overhang of the propeller being substantially at the position of the crest of the wave running from the bottom. To keep the shaft, boss and bracket clear of water under all speed conditions, the wave may be divided by deflector surfaces 19, Fig. 4, which are supported from the stem 11 and constitute upwardly inclined extensions of the bottom 13.
