Abstract

246,635. Saunders, S. E., and Clarkson, A. Dec. 12, 1924. Screw propellers; rudders.-Motor launches or hydroplanes having semi-submerged propellers are provided with a cowl shrouding the unsubmerged part of the propeller and extending down on either side. The cowl may be pivotally mounted to act as a rudder, or may be fixed and two separate rudders provided. The cowl e, Fig. 1, is secured to the transom b by stiffening webs f, and is curved so as to deflect water thrown up by the propeller c both aft and downwardly. Two rudders h are fitted on either side of the cowl, but they may be fitted aft of the cowl or forwardly on the boat. In a modification, the cowl e, Fig. 4, is pivotally mounted on brackets j and has side extensions h<1> projecting into the water to form rudder blades. Specification 5064/11 is referred to.
