Abstract

572,179. Hydroplane vessels; sails. HOOK, C. Nov. 15, 1943, No. 19041. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1942. [Classes 113 (ii) and 115] In a hydroplane vessel in which the angle of incidence of one or more submerged supporting fins, or groups of fins, is varied automatically by means of a control float skimming the surface of the water, one or more of the fins are disposed adjacent the bow of the vessel and are pivotally connected to a strut fixed relatively to the hull, whilst the float is disposed ahead of the fin, and preferably ahead of the bow of the vessel, whereby the angle of incidence of the fin is increased as it becomes more deeply submerged. Fig. 1 shows a mechanicallypropelled vessel 1 with a fixed stern fin 5 and a pair of bow fins 8 pivoted to struts 10 on a cross-beam 9, front extensions 13 of the fins being pivotally connected by links 14 to L- shaped lever arms 12 pivoted between the struts and rigidly fixed to streamlined floats 11. Fig. 4 shows a sailing vessel 15 with a sail plane 16 of aerofoil section horizontally pivoted on masts 17, the rearmost of which is swingable athwartships. Modifications of the mountings for the fins and floats are described and illustrated in the Specification, in one of which the initial angle of incidence of the fins is adjusted from within the vessel. Alternatively, the movement of the float, or the pressure thereon, may operate the fins indirectly through the intermediary of mechanical and/or electrical devices within the vessel.
