Abstract

9059. Soc. Franþaise de Machines- Outlls. June 9, 1908, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-Relates to variable-speed gearing of the class comprising constant-mesh wheels brought into action by clutches operated by a single cam. One revolution of the cam causes the speeds to be changed several times in varying order. The driving-shaft 1, Fig. 1, carries a pair of fast pinions 3, 4 driving wheels 6, 7, loose on an intermediate shaft 5 and adapted to be clutched thereto singly by a sliding double clutch 25. The shaft 5 also carries loosely a single gear 10 and a pair of gears 8, 9 coupled together. The gears 10, 8 mesh with gears 12, 13, which are coupled together and carried loosely on a driven shaft 26. The gear 9 meshes with a single gear 14 also loose on the shaft 26. A double clutch 11 may connect either the gear 10 or the pair 8, 9 to the shaft 5, and a clutch 15 may connect either the pair of gears 12, 13, or the gear 14 to the shaft 26. Power may be transmitted from the shaft 5 to the shaft 26 through the train 10, 12, or the train 8, 13, or the train 9, 14, or through the compound train 10, 12, 13, 8, 9, 14. By using the gears 6, 7 alternatively, eight speeds in all are obtained. The clutches 11, 15 are controlled through levers 16, 17 from pins 18, 19, which work in a groove in a rotary cam 20. The shape of the cam-groove is shown in Fig. 13. When one of the pins 18, 19 is on an outer circle a or an inner circle b, the corresponding clutch is thrust to one side or the other into action as the case may be. An intermediate position on a circle c corresponds to an out-of-gear position of the clutch. Consideration of the effect of turning the cam illustrated in Fig. 13 will show that speed changes are effected twice in different orders.
