Abstract

233,040. Casale, L. Jan. 31, 1024. Nitrogen. - In the synthetic production of ammonia, electrolytically-obtained oxygen is used alone or mixed with air for the gasification of fuel and in admixture with air for the combustion of the gaseous products to yield a gas which, after elimination of carbon dioxide, consists of nitrogen. The oxygen from an electrolyzer 1 passes to a gasometer 4 from which a fan 6 withdraws it, if desired in admixture with air admitted by the pipes 5, to a gas generator 7 containing a fuel such as lignites or peat. The gaseous products are passed through a purifier 8 to a boiler 9 of a power unit, where they are burnt by means of air admitted by the pipe 5<a> and oxygen conducted through the tube 5b. The power developed is used to generate electricity for the electrolysis &c. while the condensed steam from the boiler is used in the electrolyzer. After being cooled in the condenser 10 the burnt gases consisting of nitrogen and carbon dioxide are conducted by the fan 11 to the gasometer 12. Thence they are withdrawn at will, compressed in a compressor 13, and the carbon dioxide content eliminated in the refrigerator 14 and water scrubber 17, leaving pure nitrogen.
