Abstract

522,640. Gasifying solid carbonaceous materials. GAS ENGINEERS, INSTITUTION OF, and DENT, F. J. Dec. 16, 1938, No. 36677. [Class 55 (i)] In the production of combustible gas and coke by the treatment of coal with hydrogen under pressure above about 5 atmospheres, and at a temperature which, during at least a part of the process, is 800‹C. or higher, the hydrogen is obtained by the reaction between steam and gas rich in methane produced in the treatment. The gas rich in methane passes from the hydrogenation vessel 1 by a pipe 2 to a condenser 3 for the removal of tar by a pipe 4, a part being withdrawn -for storage through pipe 6 and a part passing by pipe 5 through a heat exchanger 7 to a reaction vessel 8. Steam and oxygen for partial combustion of the gas are admitted by a pipe 9 passing through the heat exchanger 7, and the resulting gas rich in hydrogen passes by a pipe 10 through the heat exchanger to which it supplies its heat. Condensed steam and carbon dioxide are removed in a washer 12, and the gas passes by pipe 13 to the retort 1 which may be of the kind described in Specification 519,246.
