Abstract
282,141. Synthetic Ammonia & Nitrates, Ltd., and Gordon, K. Sept. 11, 1926. Water gas is obtained by the gasification of solid, carbonaceous materials by causing them to react with steam, with or without air or oxygen, the heat being supplied externally through a heat resisting metal such as an alloy steel. The reaction vessels may be in the form of tubes through which the'materials are passed and may be made of steel such as " Staybrite," " Era/ A.T.V." or " V2A." In the continuous production of water-gas from powdered coke and steam, a reaction tube of ¢ inch diameter is used and is heated to 1000‹ C. If air is admitted with the steam, a gas containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen and nitrogen is obtained which, after elimination of the carbon monoxide, is suitable for ammonia synthesis.
