Description

2285769 1- Printing units for offset rotary printing machines The
invention relates to printing units for use in offset rotary printing machines, having a forme cylinder, a transfer cylinder, an inking unit and a dampening unit.
In inking and dampening units of offset rotary printing machines a greater or lesser number of rollers is necessary for transporting the ink or the dampening agent from the dosing device to the printing forme. An inking and dampening unit of this type is shown, for instance, in DE 33 08 067 Cl. Even with short inking units at least one inking roller is connected between the screen roller and the forme cylinder (DE 34 42 661 Al).
It is the aim of the invention to reduce the number of rollers in the inking or dampening unit in printing units of the above type.
According to the invention the transfer cylinder is used for the application of the ink or dampening agent, or both. The invention uses the soft property of the transfer cylinder and so when applying ink or dampening agent directly onto it the soft application rollers of the inking or dampening unit can be omitted.
For a better understanding of the invention embodiments of it will be described in detail below wi-h reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 show printing units with an -:nking unit arranged on the transfer cylinder; and Figs. 3 and 4 show printing units with a dampening unit arranged on the transfer cylinder.
Fig. 1 shows a printing unit 3 of an offset rotary printing machine containing a forme cylinder 1 and a transfer cylinder 2. A dampening unit 4 is arranged on the forme cylinder 1 and an inking unit 5 on the 5 transfer cylinder 2.
The printing unit 3 shown might co-operate, for instance, (not illustrated) with a mirror-symmetrically similar printing unit on the other side of the web 6, using the rubber-rubber principle, to print the web 6. To this end the printing forme on the forme cylinder 1 is dampened by the dampening unit 4, i.e. the nonprinting areas of the plate are wetted with water. This film of water on the non-printing areas is transferred to the transfer forme of the transfer cylinder, for instance a conventional compressible or incompressible rubber blanket. However, in this example and in the embodiment example according to Fig. 2 the surface of the transfer forme preferably has or is given hydrophilic properties. As a result the inking unit 5 set on the transfer cylinder 2 only inks the non-water-carrying areas of the transfer cylinder 2, i.e. the image areas. The image is transferred to the web 6. The inking unit 5 indicated in Fig. 1 is an aniloxLinking unit whose screen roller 7 lies against the transfer cylinder 2. However, the inking unit can instead be placed on the upper side of the transfer cylinder 2.
The invention can also be put into effect in inking units of different construction, as shown in the following Fig. 2, which uses the same numbering for components already shown in Fig. 1, as indeed do the other embodiments of the invention. In Fig. 2 a newsprint inking unit 8 is arranged on the transfer cylinder 2. The whole ink line and the dosing device, for instance a ductor with a wedge-type ink duct, are not shown. The inking rollers, normally two, are absent, and the inking unit with the following hard roller, in this case a non-reciprocating cylinder 9, lies directly against the transfer cylinder 2. The dampening unit 10 comprising three rollers, for instance, is arranged in this embodiment on the upper half of the forme cylinder 1. The method of operation of the printing unit 11 is the same as that of the 10 printing unit 3 in Fig. 1.
In the printing unit 12 according to Fig. 3 the arrangement is reversed so that the inking unit 5 is set against the forme cylinder 1 while the dampening unit 13 is on the transfer cylinder 2. This dampening unit lies against the transfer cylinder 2 via the dampening transfer roller 14 with the dampener roller omitted.
In the printing unit 12 the transfer cylinder 2 is dampened with the dampening unit 13. The transfer cylinder in turn dampens the printing forme of the forme cylinder 1. Hence only the printing areas of the printing forme are inked with the inking unit 5. These ink-carrying printing areas deliver the ink to the transfer cylinder 2 which in turn prints the web 6. Since normally the forme cylinder 1 and the transfer cylinder 2 have the same diameter, the areas of the transfer cylinder wetted with ink are always in 1:1 congruence with the printing areas of the printing f orme.
The printing unit 15 according to Fig. 4 is similar in construction to the printing unit according to Fig. 3, except that the chromium cylinder 17 of the dampening unit 16 is set directly on the transfer cylinder 2 with 4the dampener roller omitted. The method of operation of the printing unit 15 is the same as that of the printing unit 12.
In a further embodiment even the chromium cylinder can be omitted: here the dampening agent can be applied directly to the transfer cylinder with known spraying or centrifuging dampening units.
In printing units according to Figs. 3 and 4, when the inking unit is removed the dampening unit can also be used as a washing device against the build-up of dust on the transfer cylinder 2.
It has already been stated that the inking units in the case of the printing units according to Figs. 1 and 2, and the dampening units in the case of the printing units according to Figs. 3 and 4, can also be arranged after the printing zone, in the direction of rotation of the transfer cylinder. The dosing devices of the inking and dampening units have been described only by way of example since they do not belong to the scope of protection of the patent. The printing forme and/or the transfer forme can be constructed finitely as plates or endlessly in the form of sleeves.
